The pronunciation of gif argument might be worthwhile if it were about a word that actually comes up in semi-regular, face-to-face conversations, where you need a generally accepted pronunciation so that all parties know what’s being said, but when you consider that most of the time when someone is talking about gifs, and it’s important, for example, while discussing the layout and design of a website, as opposed to when it’s not important, (see: “golly gee whiz I sure do hope nobody turns this obviously planned action sequence that just took place into a gif”), all of the correspondence usually happens through text, where everybody has exactly the same spelling, and thus everybody knows exactly what you’re talking about, and nobody is confused about whether or not you were talking about a moving image or a brand of peanut butter.
